can you just as well draw the thing that you are out of on your alter? such as if you dont have any dragons blood for example can you draw a picture of a vial of it or can you use substitutions for things? Also do chants work just as good as anything?

You can can use any substitute which has the same meaning and symbolism as long as you are comfortable with the substitution. You are the only irreplaceable tool. And yes chants and mantras are effective.
