Think about it, a plumber from brooklyn finds a warp while working on a drain. He’s magically taken to a world where you need shrooms to survive. You fight turtles that fly and a dragon that throws hammers and turns into a jellyfish when he dies. Then you have to dodge fire, FIRE under the water! And finally you rescue a princess that’s butt ugly. Its clear that there was help from some mind altering drugs.
Probably not but it certainly seemed inspired by mushrooms. In particular the fly agaric mushroom is the mushroom that gives Mario certain powers and its a psychedelic mushroom.

No. Like they say, there’s a fine line between genius and madness. Miyamoto is a genius. He said he got most of his idea from playing in his backward when he was a little kid. So that’s why you see all those pipes, mushrooms, turtles, etc.

Early on, I would have said yes. But Shiggy’d still have to be doing them all the time to come up with his stuff today (like Pikman). If he’d been doing drugs constantly for that long, he’d be Ozzy Osbourne.
