What is the point of regulating video games?

Is there any proof that violent video games cause violent behavior? Or that crime-based video games make people criminals? Why is it the government’s business to tell me what games I can play?

Because if people admit that video games don’t cause violent behavior, parents will have to start taking responsibility for their children. Raising children is damned inconvenient, and scapegoats are a dime a dozen in today’s world.

The US government isn’t regulating games currently that I’m aware of, but I think the outrage is towards those in government who are pushing for these regulations. The rating systems that exist are just warnings, and I think they’re a good idea. Occasionally a game will be banned for its content, and I think that’s pretty stupid. I know other countries do this, but I’m not sure if the US does currently.

You can’t put a ban on fantasy because certain people lack the ability to separate fantasy from reality. The problem there lies in the people, not the games. Also, it’s silly to say games are dangerous because they are harmful if played in excess. This applies to just about anything, including food, which we all love and need.

I’m guessing that it is based on a study but mostly their afraid of kids trying to do what they see in video games. Also video games could suggest violence or maybe teach kids about drugs. I’m not sure if there is an OFFICIAL study done though.

It’s the same as movies, some games and displays aren’t intended for minors. It’s the same as pornography and lottery tickets, tobacco, driving. I believe in the rating system as a guideline for parents. If your parent wants you to play graphic games, than they need to purchase the game for you.

the only reason some games get band is because most parents(if not all) buy video games for their children ignoring the age and most kids am complete idiots and try and mimic like the 10 year old who tried rein-acting naruto by burying his head in a sand box so understand there not forcing you not to play a game there just trying to get the idea in parent heads

nobody is regulating video games in a sense. sure there is no adult rated titles out, but that is not because of the government, that is because companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo refuse to market those products and put them on their consoles. and retailers like gamestop, walmart, etc etc, refuse to sell the games. I dont think games are regulated at all. Look at games like GTA4, God of War, Fallout 3, Call of duty, Saints Row, Bioshock, Dead Space. Those games don’t look too regulated to me.

It’s just that when you have trouble in certain parts of a game you tend to get aggressive and angry. It can grow to more than you wanted.
In some little kids as well it teaches that violence is okay and you won’t get in trouble, when in fact, punishment for fights are getting more intense. The government is not saying that YOU in general will become a serial killer for playing too much halo, but some people aren’t "in the right mind" to handle such things.
Also, if you play too long you could get overweight. Add 7hrs of playing to eating while playing and you’ve probably eatin twice as much as you needed!

Some people think that video games can influence you as much as a person. Everything, in one way or another, will influence decisions. I doubt that all criminals learned what they do from video games. Lets be realistic. You can’t learn how to hot wire a car from playing GTA IV. Video game ratings = Basically they don’t want children (10 - 13 ) being able to buy games that have things like profanity and sexual content. I see nothing wrong with that.
This is all just my opinion on things… :)

For the same reason they rate music…..

Oh, wait…there is no good reason except to pacify a bunch of whiny soccer moms.
